Why Does Treating Sciatica Take Time?

If you’ve ever had sciatica, you’ll know how frustrating it can be when the pain just won’t go away. Patients often ask me: “Why is this taking so long?”

The truth is, sciatica pain is not just about pressure on the nerve. For years, scientists have been studying what happens at the cellular level, and the answer provides insight into why recovery takes time.

While a herniated disc or spinal changes can physically compress the nerve, that’s only half the story. The disc material itself is chemically irritating. When it comes into contact with the nerve, it releases inflammatory substances called cytokines. These chemicals create an aggressive environment around the nerve, making it hypersensitive and inflamed.

This means sciatic pain often comes from two sources at once:

  • Mechanical compression — pressure on the nerve from a disc or narrowing of the spine.
  • Chemical irritation — inflammation caused by substances released from the damaged disc.

Over time, reduced oxygen supply from compression can also cause the nerve to send out “false” signals, which you might feel as burning, tingling, or numbness.

That’s why treating sciatica is a process, not a quick fix. Your body needs time not only to ease the physical pressure but also to neutralise the inflammatory chemicals and allow the nerve to settle.
