Understanding Fibromyalgia and the Role of Nutrition

Fibromyalgia is a common but poorly understood pain syndrome that affects muscles, tendons, and ligaments without evidence of inflammation. It’s characterised by widespread pain, fatigue, and poor sleep quality. While the exact cause remains unclear, it’s believed to involve abnormal pain perception and hypersensitivity to various stimuli. The painful issues involved are not accompanied by tissue inflammation.

It’s crucial to remember that nutrition and changes in diet and lifestyle can be beneficial for managing Fibromyalgia. However, these changes should always be made in consultation with your healthcare provider. Various diet interventions have been shown to support fibromyalgia symptoms, but the following advice is for the general public. Please consult with your healthcare provider before making changes to your diet.

Remember, balancing your diet is essential for managing your symptoms. By paying attention to which foods trigger or exacerbate symptoms and keeping a diet journal, you can make informed and confident dietary choices.

  • Increase your daily intake of fruits and vegetables high in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
  • Include whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa, oats, or gluten-free options such as buckwheat, teff, and amaranth.
  • Include daily protein with every meal; if possible, omit red meat and increase legumes high in plant-based protein, fibre, and minerals.
  • Avoid processed fats such as vegetable and seed oils, and include Extra Virgin Olive oil, Coconut oil, and fatty fish. Some grains, such as chia seeds, are also high in Omega 3.
  • Increase your water intake, which helps to flush toxins away from your body.
  • Avoid caffeinated drinks and soft drinks, as this may trigger symptoms.

Remember, individual responses vary, so it’s essential to listen to your body and work with a healthcare provider or registered nutritionist to tailor your nutrition plan. This personalised approach shows that your unique needs are understood and cared for. Prioritise overall well-being, including adequate sleep and stress management, alongside a balanced diet.
