Tendon pain is one of the most frustrating problems for active people. It lingers, flares up when you least expect it, and often returns after “rest.” But modern science shows tendon pain isn’t just about inflammation, and that changes how we treat it.
What is Tendinopathy?
Tendinopathy occurs when a tendon, the tough tissue connecting muscle to bone, fails to adapt to the load placed on it. This might happen from a sudden increase in training or, ironically, from doing too little for too long. Unlike the outdated term tendinitis, tendinopathy is not just an inflammatory problem, but a structural one.
Why Rest Alone Doesn’t Work
Tendons don’t heal well with complete rest. Inactivity weakens them further, making them less resilient when you return to movement. That’s why many people get stuck in a cycle: pain → rest → more pain when they restart activity.
Achilles Tendinopathy as an Example
The Achilles tendon is the most commonly affected tendon. Symptoms often include:
- Morning stiffness in the heel or calf
- Pain during or after activity
- Thickening or swelling of the tendon
